How to Get Out of a Contract: 6 Ways to Check First

Start with the termination clause and the notice rules, because they usually set the cheapest way out. Then see whether the other side broke the contract, whether a cooling-off right applies, or whether you can agree on an exit together. Act in writing and keep copies.

Last updated . This guide is general information, not legal advice. Your rights depend on the contract type and where you live.

First: read what you signed

Find the termination clause, any early termination fee, the notice period and how notice must be sent. Note any renewal terms. Together they set what leaving will cost and the date to act by. For help reading the clause, see Termination clause: what it means.

1. Use the exit in the contract

Many contracts let you leave with notice or for a fee. This is usually the cleanest path, because both sides already agreed to it.

2. Agree on a mutual end

Example"Could we end the agreement on [date] by mutual consent, with no further fees from either side?"

If they agree, get it in writing, signed by both of you.

3. Check whether the other side broke it

If they missed payments, delivered late or changed the terms, the contract may let you end it. Follow the steps in the clause, such as written notice and time to fix the problem.

4. Check for a cooling-off period

Some types of contract in some places come with a short period to cancel. Do not assume you have one. Check the contract type and the local rules, and check the date, because these windows are short.

5. Look for a problem with the contract itself

Being pushed to sign, misleading statements, or terms the law does not allow can matter. These need a lawyer's view, so do not rely on them alone.

6. Pay the fee and leave

Sometimes the known cost of leaving is lower than a dispute. Compare the exit fee with what staying would cost.

What should I not do?

  • Do not just stop paying. It can lead to fees, collections and a damaged record.
  • Do not rely on a phone call. Send notice in writing, in the method the contract names.
  • Do not let the dates pass. Missing a notice deadline can renew the contract; see Auto-renewal clause: how to cancel.

When should I ask a lawyer?

When large amounts are involved, when the other side says you are the one in breach, or when the contract has an arbitration clause or a personal guarantee. Many lawyers offer a short first call; How much does a lawyer charge to review a contract? explains how they price the work.

Can an app help find the exit clause?

SignArmor reads a contract and lists clauses worth a second look in plain English, such as notice periods and early termination terms, with a Safety Score from 0 to 100 and a summary. It runs on iPhone and iPad, with a web app too. Bring the contract as a PDF, a DOCX file or an image file from Files on iPhone or iPad, or as a PDF or TXT file in the web app. It can read a contract written in another language; the report is in English.

It does not tell you whether you may leave, and it is not a lawyer. The file itself is not uploaded: SignArmor extracts the text on your device and masks phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers, IDs, names and addresses before the text goes to the AI provider. Your first report is free and short, with the score, the summary and the top red flag. If you buy afterwards, the same report opens in full without a new analysis.

Can I get out of a contract I just signed?
