Auto-Renewal Clause: How It Works and How to Cancel

An auto-renewal clause renews your contract for another term unless you cancel before a deadline. Find that deadline on the day you sign, put it in your calendar, and check how notice must be sent.

Last updated . This guide is general information, not legal advice. Some places have rules about automatic renewals, and they differ by country, state and contract type.

How does an auto-renewal clause work?

The contract runs for a set term. If you do nothing, it starts again for the same or a longer term, sometimes at a higher price. To cancel, you act before the notice deadline, which often falls well before the end date.

1. When is the notice deadline?

Bad"This Agreement renews automatically for successive [number]-month terms unless Customer gives [number] days written notice before the end of the current term."

Better"After the first term, this Agreement continues month to month. Either party may cancel with [number] days notice."

The longer the notice window, the easier it is to miss.

2. How long is the new term?

Same length, shorter, or month to month? A renewal for another full term locks you in again.

3. Can the price go up?

Look for "fees may increase on renewal" and ask for a limit:

Better"Renewal fees will not increase by more than [percent]."

4. How must notice be given?

Email, a form, a letter, a certified letter? Some contracts accept only one method. Use that one and keep proof that you sent it.

5. Will they remind you?

Better"Provider will send a written reminder at least [number] days before the notice deadline."

A reminder clause costs the other side little and makes a missed date less likely.

How do I cancel in practice?

  1. Find the clause and the end date, then count back to the notice deadline.
  2. Send notice in the method the contract names, as early as you can.
  3. Ask for a written confirmation.
  4. Keep copies of everything.
  5. Check the next bill. If it still charges you, reply in writing and attach your earlier notice.

Where do auto-renewal clauses show up?

In leases, gym and club memberships, software and service plans, and business contracts. They matter most where the notice window is long. For leases, see Is this lease agreement fair?. If you want out of a contract altogether, read How to get out of a contract and Termination clause: what it means.

Can an app help find the clause?

SignArmor reads a contract and lists clauses worth a second look in plain English, such as renewal terms, late fees or notice periods, with a Safety Score from 0 to 100 and a summary. It runs on iPhone and iPad, with a web app too. On iPhone and iPad you pick the contract from Files as a PDF, a DOCX file or an image file. The web app accepts PDF and TXT.

It does not track dates or send reminders, and it is not a lawyer. SignArmor reads the text out of the file on your device, so the file is not uploaded. Before that text reaches the AI provider, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers, IDs, names and addresses are masked. You get the first analysis free in a short form (score, summary, top red flag). If you pay later, the full version of that same report opens without running it again.

FAQ

Are automatic renewal clauses allowed?

They are common, but some places set rules on notice, reminders or how you can cancel, and those rules differ by country, state and contract type. Check the rules where you live, and read the clause itself.

What if I missed the deadline?

Ask the other side to waive it. Some will, especially if you ask early and politely. Otherwise check whether you can leave by paying a fee. Also check whether local rules on automatic renewals give you a way out.

Can I ask to remove it?

Yes. Month to month after the first term is a common request.

How do I cancel an auto-renewing contract?

Find the notice deadline and the method the contract names, send notice that way as early as you can, and keep proof and a written confirmation.
